Character: “Phantom” Miria
Fandom: Claymore
Personality: Quiet and serious is a pretty good way of describing Miria. She’s a natural leader, always trying to do the best she can to benefit everyone on her team to bring about the least amount of casualties, whether they be human or Claymore. She’s a brilliant strategist, as shown during the Northern War campaign, where she and the others that were stationed there had made a contingency plan in order to make sure at least some of them would survive the impending massacre.
However, despite the fact that she’s nowhere near as emotional as Helen or impulsive as Clare, Miria does have her moments where her true emotions show through – such as when she found out about Ophelia’s treachery and Hilda’s Awakening. She places the lives of those that she considers her allies and friends above her own, and she has a deep sense of honor. She also is fiercely loyal to those she considers allies, doing everything she can to help them when they need it, even if it doesn’t always seem like it at first.
Timeline: Post-timeskip, Chapter 80 or thereabouts – after the renegades defeat Agatha and Miria explains what she’s found out about the Organization and youma.
Powers/Abilities: As a Claymore, Miria has enhanced strength, speed, and regeneration abilities. However, her regeneration abilities are severely limited, seeing as she’s considered an “offensive-type” Claymore. She can reattach limbs if they are cut off, but she hasn’t been shown to completely regenerate limbs, the act being a trademark of a defensive type Claymore. Like most Claymores, she does not need to eat or drink as much as a normal human would need to, and is able to endure vast amounts of pain and trekking before she actually gets tired.
Miria earned her nickname, “Phantom”, because of the fact that she can move so fast that it looks like there’s a phantom image of her former position when she releases her youki. After the seven-year timeskip, she has trained this ability to the point where she can do it without the need to expend any of her youki. Despite the fact that these “new mirages” are slightly slower, they are considered superior because of the fact that there is no limit to which she can use these mirages as well as the fact that she’s much more precise.
She’s also a very adept leader, skilled in battle tactics and strategies. She was the one that implemented the plan during the Northern War so that at least some of the other Claymores would survive the incident.
History: Like most of the girls in Claymore, there isn’t much that is known about Miria’s past. The fact that she never mentions going home to her own hometown when she dismisses the others at least shows the fact that she has no home to go back to, assuming that it was destroyed by youma and she, like many other girls that had become Claymores, was orphaned and taken in by the Organization.
One notable thing about Miria is that she had a very close friend within its ranks, another Claymore within the same generation by the name of Hilda. While they were different in ranking, Miria and Hilda were considered close friends, mostly because they had come about the Organization through similar circumstances. They had even made a promise to each other to both be ranked as single digits when they met up again.
A few years passed, and while Miria was on a hunt with other fellow Claymores, where she was stuck with the current number 4 of the time, Ophelia. She was slightly disappointed to find out that it wasn’t Hilda that she was fighting alongside, but Ophelia didn’t say anything at first, only recounting the fact that she had been with Miria’s unit before – during an Awakened Being hunt, she had decided to stay on the sidelines because there were only youma in the area. However, during this incident, a fellow Claymore [Hilda] had approached Ophelia to give her a black card – the mark that she was reaching her limits and was about to awaken. She was trying to get the card to someone within the group [Miria], but she could barely sense her youki anymore.
Confused at first, Miria didn’t understand what that had actually meant until the Awakened Being had shown up. She showed considerable tactical skill when she and her teammates attacked the creature. But what else was strange was that Miria could sense that the creature was holding back for some strange reason. It wasn’t until she was already in mid-stroke of cutting off the Being’s head that she realized this was an awakened Hilda. Enraged that Ophelia hadn’t allowed her to see her friend as well as the fact that Ophelia had dishonored Hilda, Miria’s youki began to spike, and she nearly Awakened herself.
In revenge for the incident, Miria began the tedious task of researching everything she could about the Organization, although it wouldn’t be until years later that she had pieced everything together into a theory that would rock the very foundation of what they all had originally believed.
After a while, Miria was placed in charge of an Awakened Being hunting party, consisting of herself as leader, Deneve [#15], Helen [#22], and Clare [#47]. It’s after this fight that she first starts telling the other three what she had found out, knowing that she needed to gain allies if she were to topple the Organization. After all, why send all the troublemakers out on a mission together besides to exterminate the threat? Anyway, she informed the others that there were originally male Claymores, but they had ended up succumbing to their Awakened states faster than women, hence why only women were considered to be Claymores anymore. After telling them this and the fact that she was planning on toppling the Organization, she warns the others to keep a low profile in order to get rid of their “troublemaker” status. They then promise to meet again.
During the Northern War campaign, Miria was one of several single-digit warriors placed in charge of the operation. It’s during this time that she deduces that they were sent there on a suicide mission, that the Organization wasn’t expecting any of the 24 warriors that were gathered there to survive the impending battle. Through Miria’s quick thinking, seven of the remaining 24 had survived the ordeal – Clare, Helen, Deneve, Miria, Cynthia [#14], Yuma [#40], and Tabitha [#41]. Miria’s own squad had the least amount of casualties, only resulting in the loss of one member.
The remaining group began to train themselves to suppress their youki to avoid detection, as well as to train to become strong enough to fight against the Organization. After hearing of Clare’s intention to continue her search for Raki, Miria challenges her to a fight to see how determined she really is about doing so, and, satisfied, the group heads south.
For the most part, the group tries to keep a low profile to make sure that they aren’t detected by the Organization, but they do stop in to intervene with some of the Awakened Being hunts, mostly because they didn’t want to see more people die. Eventually they end up in Rabona, the holy city where Claymores are technically discriminated against. There they meet up with another deserter, former #3 of the Organization, “God-Eye” Galatea. She had suppressed her own youki and had been hiding in the city for some time, only to end up leading the two sent to kill her right to an Awakened Being within the city. Miria’s group intervenes as well, eventually destroying it.
After the battle, Miria then decides that the time is right to tell the others, including Galatea, Clarice [The new #47] and Miata [#4] about everything that she had done so far for research of the Organization and their motives.
Miria then tells the others that if they have any unfinished business, to take care of it now before they go after the Organization to topple it from the inside. Miria, having no home to return to or revenge to pursue outside of the Organization itself, stays behind in Rabona with Tabitha and Galatea.
